Is there a Solar Fire for Mac?

So the honest answer to the query is a short list. Astro Gold, from the same people, is a real macOS program and shares chart files with Solar Fire. Or you move to something with no operating system requirement at all, which is what this page is about.

What Solar Fire is genuinely good at

It is worth being straight about this, because most pages with this title are not. Solar Fire has been the reference professional chart program for decades, and the reason is depth. Astrolabe's own page for version 9 lists 30 house systems, 50 standard points including asteroids and hypotheticals, 26 predefined aspects, and more than 110 chart wheel designs, alongside progressions, directions, returns, harmonics, composites, astro-mapping and Vedic tools such as dasas and nakshatras.

It also writes interpretation reports you can hand to the person you read for, it runs entirely on your own machine with no connection needed, and you buy it once. There is no renewal date and nothing switches off if you stop paying.

If what you need is the widest possible calculator on a Windows machine, nothing here will beat it, and you should keep it.

The three reasons people look for an alternative anyway

Almost every switch we hear about comes down to one of these, and usually the first one is what starts the search.

• The machine. It is a Windows program, on one computer. You bought a Mac, or you want to prep a reading on a laptop that is not the one in your study, and the answer is an emulator, a second Windows licence and a setup to maintain.
• The people you read for. A chart file is a list of birth data. It does not hold what someone told you about their marriage in March, what you said back, or which of their charts you were looking at when you said it. That history ends up in a notebook, a folder of documents and a spreadsheet.
• The consultation. Readings run one to two hours. Chart software was never meant to hold them, so the session happens in a video app and then simply stops existing. By the follow-up you are working from memory, and so are they.

The first reason is a platform problem and a Mac program solves it. The second and third are not about calculation at all, which is why swapping one calculator for another calculator does not fix them.

What you give up by switching

Stated plainly, because finding this out in week three is worse than reading it now.

• Calculation breadth. Six house systems here against Solar Fire's 30, and no astro-mapping, no Vedic dasas or nakshatras. If your work lives in those, this is not a replacement.
• Chart art. Solar Fire lists more than 110 chart wheel designs. Steliara has one considered wheel, and no designer for building your own.
• Written interpretation reports. There is no report you can print and hand over. The assistant finds facts in the chart; it does not write prose about them.
• Working offline. A browser tool needs a connection. On a train with no signal, the installed program is the one that still opens.
• Owning it outright. $360 once is $360 forever. A subscription is a line in your monthly costs, and it should earn that line every month.

You do not have to give any of it up at once. Solar Fire stays installed and keeps working, and nothing about starting a trial here takes it away.

Moving your charts across

What comes over. The name on each record, the birth date and local time, the place and its coordinates, the UTC offset stored in the file, and the notes you kept against each chart, which land as notes on the chart here. You can send everything into your library as separate charts, or gather a set into one person's profile. A file can hold up to 5 MiB and 2,000 records, and likely duplicates are flagged before anything is saved rather than after.

What you re-enter. Your calculation settings do not travel. Charts are recalculated here with the house system and zodiac you choose during the import, so check those before you confirm. Subsidiary charts saved inside a Solar Fire record, such as a progression stored alongside the radix, are not carried over either; the main chart is saved and you rebuild the derived ones when you need them, which takes seconds. Anything that was never in the chart file in the first place, your notebook, your folder of session documents, is still yours to bring across by hand, and most people bring only the people they are still reading for.

The import lives in your account settings, and you can pause a large file and finish it later.

Where Solar Fire, or Astro Gold, is the better buy

Three situations, and we would rather say so here than waste your trial.

You want desktop depth on a Mac. Astro Gold for macOS is US$249.99 and is made by the creators of Solar Fire, and its chart files are interchangeable with Solar Fire's. That is a far closer match to what you already know than anything in a browser, and it is the honest answer to "Solar Fire for Mac".

Your practice is research, not consultation. If most of your hours go into rectification, harmonics, astro-mapping or Vedic technique rather than sitting with people, you are buying the half of Steliara that is thinner and skipping the half that is the point.

You read in person, or you do not want to record. The consultation capture is the reason to be here. If your readings happen across a table and stay there, a one-time licence you already own is better value than a monthly bill.

What you get instead

• Everything about each person in one place: their charts, your notes, and the consultations you have already had with them.
• The session run as a video call, with the audio recorded once both sides agree, then transcribed and summarized onto that person's profile.
• Natal and transit charts on the Swiss Ephemeris, with an orb table tuned with a practising astrologer.
• The same workspace on Mac, Windows or a borrowed laptop, with nothing to install and no licence tied to a machine.
• A practice that holds together instead of a chart program with four other tools around it.

What it costs

Against a $360 licence you own, a subscription has to keep proving itself, so it is fair to say what it buys: not the calculation, which you already have, but the consultation and the person it was about. If a subscription lapses the account turns read-only rather than locking you out, so your charts and records stay reachable.

AI will never read a chart for you. It just finds the facts faster: the aspects, the exact dates, where a planet sits. The summary captures what you said. You stay the astrologer.
